WSJ – Companies Want Access to Your Medical Files to Speed Up Life Insurance Purchases

The August 9, 2020 Wall Street Journal featured an alarming article highlighting how ‘Companies Want Access to Your Medical Files to Speed Up Life Insurance Purchases’.

Medical Practices & Physicians whom outsource their medical billing and collections to Physicians Billing Services can attest, “Doctors, hospitals and other health providers have been putting consumers’ medical information into computers for more than a decade, to try to lower costs and improve health care”, notes journalist Leslie Scism.  However, Ms. Scism highlights, “now, the data is becoming more widely used by life insurers, especially as the coronavirus pandemic keeps potential customers from visiting a lab or welcoming a paramedic into their home.”

An example of advancements in technology, Verisk Analytics “is launching a tool that uses algorithms to evaluate digitized records in real time to provide immediate assessment of an applicant in the form of a health-risk score. This means that human underwriters won’t have to spend time themselves assessing the summaries.”  The Wall Street Journal notes that “Verisk’s “EHR Triage Engine” uses algorithms designed with input from biostatisticians, data scientists, medical researchers and others. The technology can evaluate the health records of an individual in less than a minute, said Maroun Mourad, president of Global Underwriting at Verisk. In only about 15% of cases will human underwriters still need to review the data, Verisk said.”

While advancements in technology are inevitable, what is concerning to our Cardiologist, Gastroenterology and Neurosurgery clients, among others, is the limitations of the data inputted into electronic medical record without a Physicians explanation to establish the exact context.  Insurance companies, by virtue of their business models, are notable for not only minimizing risk, but more commonly, excluding coverage for risk broadly – so that probabilities of occurrence are negated, as opposed to minimized.

At Physicians Billing Service, our clients tell us that the sum of processes is what enables us to produce outstanding results for them:  leading Practice Management Software, employing Accounts Receivable Best Practices, and commitment to Total Revenue Cycle Management.

We hope you find this Wall Street Journal article to be as fascinating as we did.  Visit the Wall Street Journal’s web site to read the article.

WSJ – Early Coronavirus Vaccine Supplies Likely Won’t Be Enough for Everyone at High Risk

August 6, 2020

The Wall Street Journal and journalist, Peter Loftus, continues to provide timely and well-balanced insights on the COVID-19 pandemic crisis.  In ”Early Coronavirus Vaccine Supplies Likely Won’t Be Enough for Everyone at High Risk’, journalist Peter Loftus notes a troublesome early gap between initial vaccine supplies and the requirements for first responders and high risk populations.  Notably, Mr. Loftus highlights the “100 million Americans, including doctors and nurses, other essential workers and nursing-home residents, (whom) should get vaccinated before the general public because they are at greater risk of exposure to the virus or of contracting more severe Covid-19 disease.”

Pending FDA approval, companies including AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna are fast-tracking vaccine developments to be ready as soon as Fall 2020.  While they are ramping up to scale to billions of vaccine doses, a significant amount of vaccine supply will not most likely be available until 2021.

The clients of Physicians Billing Service, leading Medical Practices and Physicians, have been actively keeping our team of outsourced medical billers up-to-date on the latest advancements and status of the pandemic response.  Our Physician clients, from  Infectious Disease to Vascular and Interventional Cardiology, remain optimistic on the timeline to substantially respond to the Pandemic via a robust Coronavirus response.

WSJ – Sanofi, GlaxoSmithKline Ink Coronavirus Vaccine Deal With U.S.

July 31, 2020

The Wall Street Journal reported today, continued progress on the United States securing an additional 100 Million doses of Covid-19 vaccines.  In a deal arranged with Sanofi and GlaxoSmithKline, the United States will pay $2.1 Billion for the vaccines “if proven safe and effective in clinical trials”, notes WSJ Journalist, Joseph Walker.  Clinical trials are scheduled for September 2020.

The notion of when a vaccine will be available is top of mind with the Medical Practice and Physcian clients whom outsource their medical billing and collections to Physicians Billing Service.  Mr. Walker provides insights that are extremely helpful to our clients:

“The U.S. has reached deals worth over $1 billion each with vaccine makers including Pfizer Inc. and partner BioNTech SE, AstraZenecaPLC and its partner the University of Oxford, and Novavax Inc., a biotech company in Gaithersburg, Md. Each of the deals guarantees the U.S. 100 million doses or more, if the vaccines are approved by regulators.”

WSJ – Moderna’s Coronavirus Vaccine Begins Final-Stage Testing

July 27, 2020

Today’s Wall Street Journal provided more encouraging news and insights on Moderna’s Coronavirus vaccine begging the final state of testing.  Leading Medical Practices and Physicians whom outsource their medical billing and collections to Physicians Billing Service, have been keenly interested in this development, and keeping our team updated on what they hear from their peers in the Medical Industry.

WSJ Journalist, Peter Loftus, highlights:  “Researchers plan to enroll 30,000 people across the U.S. in the last-stage, or phase 3, trial of the Moderna vaccine candidate. Results, which government health officials said could come by November, will determine whether two doses protect against symptomatic Covid-19, and whether it should be cleared for widespread use”.

Moderna, which codesigned the vaccine with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, previously reported promising results of the first study of the vaccine, showing it induced immune responses and was generally safe in a small number of people.

Notably, the WSJ reports “the new phase 3 trial, titled Cove, is being conducted at nearly 90 sites in the U.S., including many in states such as Texas where the virus has surged in recent weeks”.  If the Phase 3 trials are successful, Moderna’s Coronavirus vaccine could be ready as soon as Fall 2020.

To our Medical Billing and Collection clients and their teams, many of whom are front-line responders and healthcare workers, Physicians Billing Service offers our heartfelt gratitude for your tireless efforts.  We are proud to assist you and your teams with Total Revenue Cycle Management, while you can focus on providing exceptional patient care, especially during these trying times.  We will continue to report on positive news as new milestones are achieved.

Wall Street Journal | Coronavirus Vaccine Data Raises Hope for Trio of Candidates & U.S. Strikes $2 Billion Deal for Virus Vaccine

July 21 & 22, 2020

The Wall Street Journal featured encouraging news this week about a possible COVID-19 vaccine, generating substantial interest from leading Medical Practices and Physicians whom outsource their medical billing and collections to Physicians Billing Service.

In ‘Coronavirus Vaccine Data Raises Hope for Trio of Candidates’, WSJ Journalists Stu Wu and Peter Loftus highlight “the prospects of successfully developing a coronavirus vaccine as soon as this year were buoyed Monday when three of the world’s leading candidates reported positive early trial data (Oxford researchers and AstraZeneca, Pfizer, and German partner BioNTec , and China’s CanSino Biologics.

On July 22, 2020, in ‘U.S. Strikes $2 Billion Deal for Virus Vaccine’, WSJ journalists Jared S. Hopkins and Chris Wack report “under the $1.95 billion agreement, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Defense Department will receive 100 million does of the vaccine (from Pfizer and BioNTech SE) should it be clear3ed by regulators, and can also acquire an additional 500 million doses”.  Notably, “the vaccine, which has shown promising preliminary results in small groups of patients, is set to enter late-stage testing this month” and “opens the door for health regulators to permit use as early as the fall, if the shots prove to work safely in phase 3 trials”.

With unemployment rising again in the United States, another stimulus bill being considered by legislators, and our healthcare system strained, promising news on possible vaccines by the fall, is welcomed news.

Physicians Billing Service is thankful to our clients – the best Medical Practices and Physicians in Infectious Disease and Critical Care, whom are on the frontlines of offering exceptional patient care during these trying times.

Wall Street Journal | Hospitals Appeal Decision on Disclosure of Negotiated Rates

| Medical Billing & Collection Services| Medical Practice Types We Serve | Award Wining

July 19, 2020

Today’s Wall Street Journal features an insightful article that highlights the  current conflict in healthcare related to price transparency and whether hospitals should be required to disclose negotiated rates with insurance carriers.  As on of the best Medical Billing and Collection firms, we are proud to support leading Medical Practices and Physicians from coast-to-coast.  Our company is retained to help Medical Practices and Physicians navigate the vast maze of insurance / payer rules, and increase their cash flow via superior medical collections from Payers.

In ‘Hospitals Appeal Decision on Disclosure of Negotiated Rates’, WSJ journalist, Stephanie Armour, reports “The American Hospital Association appealed a decision upholding a Trump administration rule the requires hospitals to disclose the rates they negotiate with insurance companies that aren’t made public”.

Ironically, the American Hospital Association preposterously argued in their appeal “that the rule compelling hospitals to publish their negotiated rates goes beyond the statutory intent of the Affordable Care Act”, and in notable ‘double-speak’, “violates the First Amendment of forcing hospitals to disclose proprietary information”.  Our Physician and Medical Practice clients are struck by the notable irony between the euphemism, ‘Affordable Care Act’, and their ‘First Amendment’ claim on ‘proprietary information’.

WSJ – ‘Face Masks Really Do Matter. The Scientific Evidence Is Growing’

July 18, 2020

Today’s Wall Street Journal reports encouraging news that “the (COVID-19) pandemic could be brought under control over the next four to eight weeks if “we could get everybody to wear a mask right now”, says Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Dr. Redfield cites a study at Mass General Brigham (MGB), the largest health care system in Massachusetts, with 12 hospitals and more than 75 000 employees, and available for reference on the JAMA Network.

Wall Street Journalist, Caitlin McCabe, highlights “that universal use of surgical masks helped reduce rates of confirmed Covid-19 infections among health-care workers at the Mass General Brigham health-care system in Massachusetts”.  As a statistical proxy of progress in the United States, “the CDC said the use of cloth face coverings while in public in the U.S. increased to 76.4% in mid-May, compared with 61.9% in April, according to internet surveys sent to roughly 500 adults each month”, notes Ms. McCabe.

Physicians Billing Service recognizes the profound efforts of front-line responders and healthcare workers, and we remain incredibly grateful.  Our Outsourced Medical Billing and Collection proud to provide the best Medical Billing, Medical Coding, Medical Collections, Practice Management Software and Accounts Receivable Management to hundreds of leading Medical Practices and Physicians from coast-to-coast including Arlington VA, District of Columbia, Boston MA, Fort Lauderdale FL, and Stamford CT.

According to projections, the stakes of wearing masks are significant.

The Wall Street Journal article highlights “recent projections from the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation”, noting “the Covid-19 death toll in the U.S. would rise to more than 224,000 by Nov. 1″.  ”  Yet if 95% of the U.S. population began wearing masks, the expected death toll would drop by more than 40,000 cases to about 183,000 people”.

WSJ – Moderna’s Covid-19 Vaccine Moves to Bigger Study

July 15, 2020

Medical Practices and Physician clients of Physicians Billing Service are encouraged by today’s news as reported by the Wall Street Journal – ‘Moderna’s Vaccine Moves to Bigger Study’.  The Covid-19 pandemic has been all-consuming for healthcare workers, and we remain grateful for their tremendous service and exceptional care.

WSJ Journalist, Peter Loftus, reports “the new results, published online by the New England Journal of Medicine, showed that the vaccine induced the desired immune response” and “was generally safe and well-tolerated”.  Notably, Dr. Anthony Facuci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, commented “this is really quite good news” and “the gold standard of protection against a viral infection is neutralizing antibodies” and “the data from the study small numbers as it may be, are pretty clear that this vaccine is capable of inducting quite good (levels) of neutralizing antibodies”.

WSJ – Hospitals Struggle to Block Internal Spread of Covid-19

July 7, 2020

Today’s Wall Street Journal featured an alarming front page article on how hospitals are struggling to block the internal spread of Covid-19.  Journalists, Russell Gold and Melanie Evans, write “although a small fraction of all cases, coronavirus infections spread inside hospitals pose an obstacle to the institutions’ ability to fully reopen and persuade people they’re safe – a step eventually needed for both public health and for hospital finances”.

The article documents workers at the University of Illinois Hospital in Chicago who have tested positive for the coronavirus, with severe implications.  While efforts have been underway to utilize negative-pressure rooms that “aerosolize the virus”, however, there seems to be a shortage of such rooms.  Notably, the WSJ notes that “hospitals are creating Covid-designated clinics to isolate infected patients” and “screening anyone entering buildings”, as well as stepping up cleaning efforts.  To read the full article, please visit the Wall Street Journal web site.

At Physicians Billing Service, we are optimistic that an antibodies or vaccine solution remains on the horizon, while the economy opens back up.  We are thankful for our physician and medical practice clients who continue to entrust us with their outsourced medical billing and collection needs.  If you or your Medical Practice has questions about Medical Billing or Outsourcing Medical Billing, we would be glad to speak with you and provide you with a complimentary quote.  We do not charge set-up fees, or start-up fees, and our proud to stand on one principle:  Physicians Billing Service only gets paid when the Physician and Medical Practice get paid!

WSJ – Antibodies Can Be the Bridge to a Vaccine

July 6, 2020

Today’s Wall Street Journal featured an excellent editorial, ‘Antibodies Can Be the Bridge to a Vaccine’, by Dr. Borio (Vice President at In-Q-Tel and former director for medical and biodefense preparedness policy at the National Security Council) and Scott Gottlieb (resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and board member of Pfizer and Illumina).

Dr. Borio and Mr. Gottlieb highlight “one promising option to mitigate the Covid-19 crisis “is monoclonal antibodies – lab-produced molecules engineered to mimi antibodies that occur naturally in response to an infection or vaccine.  Like natural antibodies, the lab versions bind to the virus and prevent its spread”.  Moreover they write, “antibodies are a hedge against the risk that the virus mutates in ways that evade other drugs or vaccines”.  The article is well worth reading.  To read the full article, visit The Wall Street Journal web site.
