This past Monday, February 24, 2014, the Wall Street Journal published an excellent article entitled “How to Bring the Price of Health Care Into the Open” by Melinda Beck.

The article notes that “unlike other industries, prices for health care can vary dramatically depending on who’s paying”. Moreover, Ms. Beck notes that “Federal and state agencies are gathering reams of price information from doctors and hospitals and post ing them for the public”.

The article contains an interesting map graphic that shows the varying costs of example procedures amongst medical centers and hospitals in Southern California.  For example, the cost of a ‘heart failure and shock’ procedure at Sherman Oak Hospital is noted at $39,795 vs. $125,036 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center near Beverly Hills, California.

As Physicians and Medical Practices are aware, medical billing and collections is becoming increasingly complex – augmented by the Affordable Care ActTraining for ICD-10 and the advent of electronic health medical records.
